Proposal-Weight in the Media Affecting Women
Weight in the media-affecting women has been a very important subject for some time now. Women are concerned about their weight enough from boys and friends, but when the media is thrown into the picture women get even more concerned about how much their eating and exercising. Almost a century ago women with a figure to them was seen as attractive and healthy, and if you were a full sized figure it showed that you were a wealthy person, and the skinny women were just peasants. Now, in the present day women that are tiny with nothing to them is found more attractive to everyone. Much or most of this comes from the media like magazines, movies, and weight loss commercials.
Many girls and women see skinny girls on television and in magazines and this make them think that this is the way that they are supposed to look. On the cover of magazines there is always a beautiful skinny girl especially on guys magazines. Men do not want to look at a bigger unattractive girl on Sports Illustrated; they would rather see a thin woman in a bikini. This puts much pressure on women because we know that that is what men like to see. On many television shows, whether it is reality or something like a soap opera, the women are very thin and attractive. It is hard for men as well because on many magazines and television shows the men are in great shape and are very attractive as well.
This is a very important issue because it can lead to many women developing an eating disorder. One out of 10 girls will develop anorexia or bulimia. These conditions can cause life long effects and can even be deathly to women. Anorexia and Bulimia are happening to younger and younger girls every year because they feel that there is some kind of standard that they need to be meeting. Although a good portion of our society is overweight many women feel that not eating is the best solution, instead of working out. This is also a big problem because we have heard for years about models starving themselves to make the cut and even dying because of it. It is not healthy to try and be the smallest size that you possibly could be, but it is healthy to eat the right foods and work out at a respectable rate.
The media affects everyone so much everyday, but it affects women to an even higher level than it does to men. Although it is hard, women should be pretty much satisfied with how they look and try to ignore what the media says as much as possible. I would like to show people that the weight in the media affects women very much and it is becoming a big problem.
Sounds like an interesting topic. It has been talked about for a long time, but it'll be interesting to see if there have been studies to prove a link between media pressure and personal behaviors.
